A.J. Brown recently experienced a familiar setting as the New England Patriots conducted joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles during training camp. Following a challenging 2025 season for both Brown and the Eagles’ offense, Philadelphia traded him to the Patriots for future draft picks. The trade occurred amidst signs of a strained relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts. More than two months after Brown’s transfer to New England, questions remained about his relationship with Hurts.
After the joint practice between the Eagles and Patriots, Brown confirmed he had not spoken to Hurts since joining the Patriots. When asked about communication with Hurts since June, Brown simply replied, “No.” He maintained a positive outlook on questions concerning his former teammates.
None of that stuff even matters, man. You all should want to report something positive. You know asking the question is going to turn negative. So let’s not get into that. It’s love my way,
Brown expressed when reporters inquired further.
Hurts shared a similar sentiment regarding Brown. I’ve got a lot of love for him and always have,
said the Super Bowl LIX MVP.
Brown hinted at a possible reconnection with Hurts during joint practices in Foxborough. During his time with the Eagles, Brown recorded the top two single-season receiving yardage marks in the team’s history, achieving 1,496 yards in 2022 and 1,456 in 2023. Despite his achievements, the Eagles were eliminated in the wild-card round at home against the San Francisco 49ers. Following the loss, Brown expressed to the Eagles’ front office his desire for a change, a decision confirmed by general manager Howie Roseman. Sources indicated Brown’s frustrations partly stemmed from not being targeted enough by Hurts when facing zone coverage.
Throughout the 2025 season, Brown’s social media and media comments suggested discontent with his offensive role. Periods during joint practices saw Brown engaging with former teammates Saquon Barkley and Cooper DeJean.
During practices, Brown connected on all six targets from third-year quarterback Drake Maye in 7-on-7 and team drills. However, he could not secure a pass during a one-on-one against All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Brown discussed the emerging chemistry with Maye, acknowledging the challenges but recognizing the young quarterback’s unique abilities.
There’s definitely been some challenges, but he’s very special, and he makes my job a lot easier. Just learning how he sees the game and getting on the same page,
Brown commented.
Despite the reunion with the Eagles, Brown did not see it as an end to his chapter with the team, expressing ongoing affection for Philadelphia while his focus remains on New England.
It’s love. I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly and I will always love Philly but I’m here now. That’s where my feet are and that’s what I’m focused on,
Brown declared.
The Eagles are set to begin the regular season at home against the Washington Commanders on September 13. Meanwhile, the Patriots will kick off their 2026 season on September 9, facing the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
