About 25 years ago, Jake Berry was in his freshman year of college when he received distressing news. One of his closest friends, Jack, had been hospitalized suddenly. The details about Jack’s condition were scarce.
“In those days, texting was still new, so I was relying on phone calls for updates,” Berry shared. This unexpected event landed on a Thursday, typically a night out with friends. However, Berry chose solitude, seeking clarity and more information. “That night in my dorm became one of the loneliest experiences,” he recalled.
Late into the evening, a friend named Jess visited Berry’s dorm room, accompanied by two others, Kim and Corey, who were visiting for the weekend. Understanding Berry’s situation, Kim and Corey offered their assistance.
The two women retrieved their car, picked up Berry, and drove him north to his hometown, about an hour’s journey. “They dropped me at a friend’s place where others were gathering,” Berry recounted. “I spent a night of comfort, grieving and sharing with friends.”
Jack was eventually diagnosed with lymphoma and passed away a year later. Yet, the friendships formed around Jack’s ordeal remain a vital part of Berry’s life. “Those friends are now like family,” he noted. “We have shared the ups and downs, and many of us have returned to our hometown. Here, we are raising our children together.”
Berry often reflects on the kindness shown by Kim, Corey, and Jess, acknowledging the critical role they played. “I think about the impact they had on my life and hope their kindness has been reciprocated manifold,” he expressed.
Though Berry lost contact with Kim and Corey, their act of generosity is unforgettable. It underscores the power of unexpected kindness in shaping lives.
