Amazon plans to deliver small, lightweight packages by drone to millions more customers by the end of the year. This expansion targets nearly 500 U.S. cities, focusing on suburban areas. According to Amazon’s announcement on Wednesday, customers may receive their drone-delivered packages in as quickly as 30 minutes.
Drones used by Amazon can carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds. This development will heighten competition between Amazon and Walmart, both of whom focus on speedy delivery times using a combination of drones and traditional drivers.
While drones cannot yet replace delivery drivers and trucks, the strategy aims to improve customer satisfaction by providing faster deliveries. Enhanced delivery speed is expected to attract more shoppers.
Expansion Strategy
Amazon’s drone delivery will grow more than sixfold nationwide, reaching hundreds of new communities, including the Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Boise metro areas. The drones will primarily operate in suburban locales, avoiding areas with skyscrapers and major airports.
Each drone site supports multiple cities within a metro area, although Amazon has not revealed the precise number of new sites.
“It’s still an experiment. It’s still in test and learn mode,” said Sucharita Kodali, a retail analyst at Forrester.
Despite hundreds of thousands of deliveries by Amazon drones this year, drones still represent a minor part of package deliveries due to limited capacity and operational challenges, including tree cover and landscaping.
Challenges and Improvements
Drones face regulatory obstacles in every community Amazon wishes to enter, as well as potential noise concerns. More than 20 years after Jeff Bezos first envisioned drone deliveries, ongoing testing continues to address these hurdles.
Amazon’s planned expansion seems aggressive; however, many of the 500 planned locations might be small towns grouped near metro areas. Simply launching services in a city does not guarantee significant sales, according to Kodali.
Walmart is already offering drone delivery at over 75 locations in states such as Arkansas, Florida, and Texas. The company aims to expand to 150 more locations by 2027 in collaboration with Wing, a division of Alphabet.
Consumer Reception and Pricing
The novelty of drone delivery may initially attract orders, but sustained use is uncertain. For Amazon Prime members ordering over $50, drone delivery will be free, whereas smaller orders will incur a $2.99 fee. Non-members will pay $4.99 per delivery.
Drones might benefit urgent lightweight deliveries, such as medications. Companies like DoorDash are also experimenting with drone-based delivery services.
Future of Drone Deliveries
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote that the company has gained extensive insights from operating drones at sites in Arizona, Florida, and other states. Each location has drones covering about 175 square miles, requiring multiple launch sites to serve a larger area.
Amazon seeks to serve 30 million customers by year-end, aiming to deliver half a billion packages by the decade’s end, with a target delivery time of 30 minutes.
Despite investing heavily in warehouses and fulfillment centers, the economic viability of drones compared to trucks is uncertain, given the specialized team required for drone operations. Amazon holds certification by the Federal Aviation Administration, including waivers to fly drones beyond the pilot’s line of sight.
Current draft regulations from the federal government may allow broader drone operation beyond the visual line of sight, but these are pending finalization.
