National park supporters plan a nationwide day of action against President Donald Trump’s agenda on August 25. They demand increased protection and investment for the federal workforce maintaining the country’s parks. The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) leads the effort, urging the public to sign a petition to influence Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum in defending parks and employees.
The NPCA claims the National Park Service has lost 25% of its permanent staff recently, affecting rangers, maintenance workers, and educators. Staff shortages reportedly weaken educational programs, undermine scientific and conservation work, and threaten emergency response and visitor safety.
Activities planned from August 22 to September 1 feature around 30 events across 20 states and Washington, D.C. These actions highlight broader disagreements over Trump’s public lands approach, which critics oppose due to staffing losses and increased foreign visitor fees.
Administration’s Policies
The administration contends its policy expands recreational access, finances park infrastructure, and balances conservation with growth. Burgum claims Trump protects the country’s landscapes while reducing regulatory obstacles. Officials cite ongoing investments under the Great American Outdoors Act as proof of conservation efforts.
“Further, if you look at the accounts they are following on X, you will see they follow AOC, Center for American Progress, Sunrise Movement, Indivisible (the group who hosted the No Kings rallies), to name a few that show the political leanings of this group. Any insinuation that the NPCA is non-partisan is farcical,” a Department of Interior spokesperson stated to Newsweek.
Trump’s team criticizes NPCA’s partisanship, noting Democratic campaign contributions from NPCA employees. Newsweek sought comments from the White House, Burgum’s office, and NPCA.
Reasons Behind the Campaign
The campaign highlights the loss of National Park Service employees and insufficient federal support. Shortages limit educational programs, research capacities, and emergency responses. The petition urges protection for parks and enhanced staff investment.
Mass terminations, hiring bans, and incentivized resignations reduced agency personnel. In February 2025, 1,000 probationary Park Service employees were fired but later reinstated. Departures through retirement and resignation programs further depleted experienced staff.
Trump administration decisions have also fueled opposition from visitors and conservation groups. These include pricing changes for U.S. residents and international visitors regarding park access.
Park Access and Monument Reviews
Trump’s executive order mandates review of monument materials to emphasize American achievements, removing content deemed disparaging or divisive. Meanwhile, increased domestic energy production, timber harvesting, and fast-tracking permits shape broader public lands management strategies.
Burgum cites the Great American Outdoors Act as a significant public-lands investment, supporting repairs to historical sites and visitor facilities.
