NFL Joint Practice Brawls Lead to Fines and Calls for New Sanctions

The NFL is experiencing increased tensions during joint practices. On Thursday, a notable incident occurred involving a clash between the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. Quarterback Jameis Winston found himself at the center, reportedly engaging in the altercation.

According to the Giants’ starting quarterback, Jaxson Dart, he witnessed Winston in the fray and decided to intervene. Dart stated, “I just looked over and saw the red 19 jersey (referring to Winston) and I was like, ‘I got to go.’ I got to go help my boy!”

The string of confrontations includes a significant scuffle between the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints during a session in Oxnard, California. This week, the NFL responded by imposing $500,000 fines on both teams, signaling an effort to emphasize sportsmanship.

The NFL’s Competition Committee has highlighted conduct during joint practices in recent years. The league reaffirmed this focus to all 32 teams this summer.

Despite financial penalties, such measures appear insufficient. Recent events highlight the need for additional sanctions directly targeting players involved in these incidents. Current practices during training camps do not levy fines against players, unlike regular-season games.

Historical encounters such as one between the Cleveland Browns’ cornerback Troy Hill and New York Giants’ wide receiver Sterling Shepard underscore this persistent issue.

Throughout the week, numerous clashes erupted during joint practices. Encounters involved the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and another between the Jaguars and Saints. The Cowboys and Saints’ practice became particularly intense, featuring wrestling-like movements.

Similar confrontations occurred between the Jaguars and Panthers, and ongoing tensions involved the Eagles and Patriots. Both coaching staffs preemptively urged players to avoid altercations, but incidents still occurred.

“I don’t want anybody fighting,” stated Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. “I don’t want our guys fighting in practice. I don’t want them throwing punches.” He acknowledged that such actions result in ejections during games.

In another instance, the Bears’ joint practice with the Bengals saw a notable skirmish involving Bears’ receiver Ray-Ray McCloud. His altercation led to additional Bengals players engaging in the brawl.

At Miami Gardens, where the Dolphins practiced with the Giants, players from both teams faced exclusion for physical conduct. Nonetheless, sitting out during practice may not be an effective deterrent, particularly for experienced players who may find relief in such breaks.

The focus on team fines alone does not appear to influence individual behaviors significantly. Addressing incidents involving direct player fines could change this dynamic and align joint practice conduct with that of regular-season expectations.

For it to be effective, the NFL could consider implementing additional measures and oversight during joint practices. Compliance guidelines already exist for games, identifying fighting as a behavior within the league’s control.

Efforts to curb these incidents took a step forward, but further measures may be necessary to compel players to control their emotions during joint sessions. Engaging in financial penalties for players involved could serve as a possible solution to deter future occurrences.
