Impact of Stripping Lawyer Contracts on Unaccompanied Migrant Children
Critics argue that removing contracts from seasoned lawyers weakens protections for vulnerable children. This change increases their risk of deportation.
An example cited is a case in 2021 where Border Patrol agents intercepted an unaccompanied minor from Honduras after crossing the Rio Grande into Texas.
The current administration, under Trump’s leadership, terminated agreements with nonprofit and legal aid groups representing these children. Due to this decision, unaccompanied migrant children facing deportation lost their legal advocates.
In response, the administration is now seeking to fill this gap by enlisting both active and retired military lawyers.
