Power Outages in Gary Spark Discussions and Reassurance
An online timeline for restoring power did not include Gary, causing frustration among residents. This led to a press conference on Wednesday headed by Mayor Eddie Melton. Following a storm on August 11, which disrupted power for 301,000 customers, many in Northwest Indiana, including Gary, remained powerless for over nine days.
By Thursday morning, NIPSCO’s outage tracker showed 64,017 customers still without electricity, with 25,560 in Gary. Melody Birmingham, president of the Utilities Group at NiSource, joined Melton to address concerns about the restoration timeline. NiSource is the parent company of NIPSCO.
Many neighboring areas had their power restored, allowing some schools to resume classes. In Gary, certain areas had power, and the 21st Century Charter School was open. However, other schools in the Gary Community School Corp. remained closed due to outages. Mayor Melton assured that the city had not been ignored and confirmed ongoing repair efforts.
Birmingham explained that the 99 mph winds had caused significant damage, with large trees toppling onto poles and power lines, creating complex repair challenges. She emphasized the extensive efforts being made to rebuild systems that often take weeks or months but were being expedited.
The initial damage assessments required inspecting 2,000 miles of infrastructure to determine the necessary repairs. Workers found extensive damage, including 291 utility poles and 44 transmission poles needing serious repairs or replacement. Crew efforts continue, despite an incident involving gunfire at workers on August 14.
Even after the shooting, crew members from states like Kentucky and Ohio joined the restoration efforts. Birmingham stressed the need for patience and understanding from the community while repairs continue. A group of clergy also engaged with city officials, organizing a prayer vigil to seek solutions through faith and communication.
Pastor Antoine Goffin, who organized the prayer vigil and serves as the New Chicago police chief, highlighted the importance of clear communication from NIPSCO to ease public tensions. Goffin clarified that the restoration efforts were determined by infrastructure needs rather than socio-economic factors.
