Republican officials in New Jersey have reported reconnecting with Representative Tom Kean Jr. after weeks of his absence from Congress. The unexpected re-engagement comes as he gears up for a significant re-election campaign, following nearly 12 weeks away due to an undisclosed medical condition.
As news of his return circulated, Carlos Santos and Joe LaBarbera, key Republican figures in New Jersey, received calls from Kean. Santos received a call at 4:52 p.m. on a Thursday, followed shortly by LaBarbera, who noted receiving his call five minutes later while driving.
LaBarbera recounted asking Kean if he needed anything, to which Kean responded asking for prayers. Despite his absence, Kean’s tone was reportedly optimistic. Santos, a leader in Kean’s home county of Union, mentioned that Kean sounded healthy and appeared eager to resume his role in the upcoming campaign.
Both Santos and LaBarbera shared that Kean reassured them of his expected full recovery, although he remained reserved about the specifics of his health condition. His time away from Congress began in mid-March, during a politically crucial period.
Kean’s return is significant as he prepares for a challenging campaign season. His colleagues and supporters maintain cautious optimism about his health and political future.
