In an op-ed for the Financial Times, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, previewed significant economic actions against Iran, describing them as “an economic D-Day” and “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary.” Bessent urged countries to avoid financially supporting Iran, warning that they “should expect to share in its isolation.” He emphasized that becoming a sanctuary for terror would lead to global pariah status in the view of the United States.
Bessent did not disclose specific economic maneuvers the U.S. plans to enact. He will address these plans in a press conference later today. During a recent Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Bessent highlighted the president’s efforts to leverage every government agency and authority, asserting that actions once thought unattainable are now possible.
President Trump recently threatened “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” referring to the forthcoming actions as “economic D-Day.” Iran is already under heavy U.S. sanctions. The possibility of targeting countries that engage in business with Iran could potentially impact China, a significant trading partner for both Iran and the U.S. Furthermore, China’s President, Xi Jinping, has planned a visit to the U.S. next month, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
