Charlie Larson, a senior at Metea Valley, consistently prioritizes his team over personal accolades. Last year, as a junior, he played quarterback for the Mustangs, passing for 1,520 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 642 yards and scoring eight times. These efforts earned him the offensive MVP award.
Larson’s journey as a quarterback began during his freshman and sophomore years. Despite not being a standout, he took on the role because first-year coach Patrick Sheehan had limited options. “Charlie was a warrior last year,” Sheehan noted. “He stepped up and played quarterback, executing the running offensive strategy effectively.”
This dedication earned respect from Sheehan, who praised Larson as being the “soul of our team.” Despite having more experience as a safety, Larson embraced transitioning to a slot receiver when junior quarterback Iggy Amorrortu joined from Wheaton St. Francis. Sheehan approached Larson about the position change, to which Larson responded without hesitation, “All right, I guess I’ll get receiving gloves.”
Larson adapted quickly, showcasing his natural athletic ability by mastering the new position in just a few days. His leadership on and off the field made the switch seamless for the team. Amorrortu noted, “He was very welcoming. If playing a different position helps us win, he’s all for it.”
Larson’s commitment to change yielded results in the season opener against St. Charles East. Although the Mustangs fell 27-10, Larson caught three passes for 40 yards and made an interception, showcasing his defensive skills. His performance indicated a promising new role.
Larson’s love for football began with flag football and evolved into tackle football by seventh grade. Reflecting on this journey, he expressed confidence in playing on both sides of the ball in college. “I love both,” he affirmed, emphasizing his enduring passion for the sport.
Beyond his athletic skills, Larson values unity and support as team captain. “I think my role is to be the good cop, encouraging everyone,” Larson explained, acknowledging the demanding nature of coaching. Larson is inspired by his own mentors and is determined to uplift his teammates.
Larson’s qualities as a player and teammate are valued by the Mustangs. Amorrortu remarked on Larson’s uniqueness, “You don’t find Charlie Larson really anywhere you go.” Larson exemplifies dedication and leadership, proving invaluable to his team.
