Roman Guzman of Providence took a significant trip in July to Sweden to participate in the Gothia Cup, the world’s largest youth soccer tournament. The junior defender returned home enriched with new insights and heightened motivation.
“It was very different,” Guzman explained. “Coming from America to an 18-hour flight away, you could feel a difference upon arrival. Everything—its technicality and physicality—was amplified. It was incredible.”
Guzman applied his experiences in the season opener on Monday, contributing a goal and an assist as the Celtics dominated host Joliet Catholic with a 7-0 victory. Jovanny Gonzalez led Providence with two goals and one assist. Billy Savarino also had a goal and an assist, while Christian Hofferica, Aldo Dominguez, and Chris Serrano each scored goals. Aleksander Chavez and Caleb Pintar combined efforts for a shutout, with Chavez making a crucial penalty kick save. Guzman, alongside Luca Bullion, Cameron Klene, James Nagle, and Cooper Wojcik, fortified the defensive line, limiting Joliet Catholic to a single shot on goal. Hilltoppers’ Mark Vasecka contributed with six saves.
This match marked the 600th career win for Providence coach Mike Taylor. “I don’t keep track, but Mike Stacy, who handles our social media, mentioned it over the summer,” Taylor said. “When I added it up, I realized I was one win away from 600. That was surprising. Coaching has been a joy and the kids keep me energized.”
The Celtics quickly established dominance, gaining a 4-0 lead before halftime. Guzman scored his second varsity goal, converting a rebound following a shot by Leo Mendoza that hit the post. “Scoring feels great, especially with this team,” Guzman remarked. “They’re fantastic to be around and celebrating with them is always a joy.”
Guzman reflected on his Swedish adventure, playing with LA Bulls of MLS Next. “It was a great experience, leading a newly-met group as captain. I also recorded an assist over there. It was all positive.”
Hailing from Joliet, Guzman entertained the idea of attending Joliet Catholic. “I was considering JCA, but my friend Jovanny Gonzalez, whom I’ve known since I was five, convinced me to join the Celtics,” he noted. “It’s enjoyable competing against Joliet Catholic.”
Gonzalez echoed his happiness with Guzman’s choice. “I’ve played with Roman since I began soccer at the park district. I wanted him and others to join here; he’s incredibly dedicated and achieves his goals. Securing his varsity spot is testament to his work ethic. He’s like a younger brother to me.”
Now driven by newfound determination, Guzman sets his sights on playing at even higher levels. The journey began in Sweden. “It flicked a switch in me,” Guzman explained. “All I want is to return and play at that high level again.”
