The ongoing trend of NFL players returning to collegiate levels is prompting swift decisions from college programs, including the Alabama Crimson Tide. Head coach Kalen DeBoer recently acknowledged the potential for adding a former player back to the roster, though no immediate moves are planned.
DeBoer explained that discussions with athletic director Greg Byrne have centered around what is permissible under current rules. He revealed a potential for a previous team member to rejoin, yet their participation would be delayed. This was evidenced in a report shared by FOX54 News Huntsville.
“There is a possibility out there of someone who was on our roster in the past. Again, right now, he wouldn’t be able to come in and play,” DeBoer stated.
DeBoer is likely referring to the legal proceedings concerning the 2022 recruiting class, whose members were granted an extra year of NCAA eligibility by one court ruling, only to have a stay imposed later. Certain players, such as Thomas Castellanos from Florida State, have received individual rulings allowing transfers to new schools.
Although DeBoer did not specify which 2022 recruits, initially scouted by ex-coach Nick Saban, might be eligible, speculation arose during subsequent discussions about kickers and punters. Several players from that class underperformed or transferred, sparking curiosity about their potential return.
Kobe Prentice, who was recently cut by the New England Patriots, could possibly return to Tuscaloosa. Running back Jam Miller, battling for roster inclusion, might also come back to address injuries in the backfield. However, players like Jihaad Campbell, Ty Simpson, and Tyler Booker appear content in the NFL.
The situation remains unstable, leaving DeBoer to focus on immediate tasks. He mentioned the fast-paced developments in college sports and the crucial updates from Greg Byrne about ongoing decisions.
“Just got to see how things move forward and progress,” noted DeBoer. “You just never know each day in the world we’re in right now, what tomorrow might look like. We’ll kind of see as we go, but I know there’s a lot of conference and national [officials] figuring this thing out, and Greg Byrne continues to keep me updated on everything.”
Given these complexities, perhaps familiar faces will once again unite under the Crimson Tide banner.
