Josh Yago of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish became a focal point during the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse championship on Memorial Day. Before the game against Princeton, Yago, a graduate transfer from Air Force and a second lieutenant in the U.S. Space Force, stood at attention and saluted during the national anthem in Charlottesville.
This display of patriotism quickly went viral, with several videos collecting hundreds of thousands of views online. “SportsCenter” shared a full video showing Yago in full Notre Dame gear, helmet off, with his right hand raised in salute as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played.
Yago is more than an athlete caught on camera. He spent four years at Air Force, became a standout player, graduated, and transferred to Notre Dame for his final lacrosse season. He is poised to continue serving his country after his athletic career.
The sight of a player with a military background saluting on Memorial Day resonated strongly with American sports fans. Conversations surrounding athletes, the national anthem, and patriotism have often been divisive. Yago’s simple, respectful act stood out as genuine and heartfelt.
Prior to the championship game, one of Yago’s mentors reminded him to “play for those service members.” Yago expressed his desire to represent fellow military service members from Air Force, Space Force, and across the branches.
Despite Notre Dame’s loss to Princeton, which ended 16-9, Yago’s salute remains one of the day’s most significant moments. His display of respect highlighted his dedication to country and sport.
