Study Reveals Alarming CTE Prevalence Among Former NFL Players

The National Football League (NFL) has intensified efforts to ensure player safety, focusing on head injuries. However, the discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) linked to former players has sparked ongoing concern about its impact on current and future athletes.

A new study published in The BMJ reveals significant findings from a six-year research period. It indicates that one in four NFL players may develop CTE during their lifetime. Researchers assessed 878 former players who died between 2016 and 2021, finding at least 215 had CTE in varying stages, presenting a prevalence of 24.5%. Many brains were not examined, suggesting the actual figures could be higher.

If these statistics were applied to the current NFL roster, which includes 1,696 active players, around 415 could potentially be diagnosed with CTE. The disease is confirmed posthumously through brain examination and is caused by repeated head impacts and severe head trauma. Symptoms include memory loss, mood swings, and erratic behavior.

First identified in boxers, CTE is now associated with football due to the frequent head impacts experienced. It has also been found in sports like hockey and rugby. The condition gained attention when notable players like Junior Seau, Mike Webster, and Frank Gifford were diagnosed postmortem. Dr. Bennet Omalu’s examination of Webster dubbed him “Patient Zero,” initiating a concussion crisis within football.

Dr. Julian Bailes, a neurosurgeon at Q-30 Sports Science, has extensively studied CTE and concussions, contributing over 300 publications. He emphasizes that the study is a call to action for football stakeholders.

“We have made progress in recognizing and managing concussions, but science shows diagnosed concussions are just part of the equation,” Dr. Bailes stated. “Repetitive head impacts accumulated over years matter, and we need to pursue proactive brain protection.”

He suggests altering rules, training, equipment, and approaches to minimize brain trauma, advocating proactive measures.

The NFL has implemented strategies to reduce head impacts and concussions, aiming to improve physical and mental well-being for its community. A statement from the league underlines their commitment.

The NFL Players Association echoes the need for action across football. The 2025 season saw 168 documented concussions, a 30% rise from 2024, alongside 538 evaluations and 26 medical timeouts.
