Controversy over LGBTQ-Themed Children’s Books in Utah Library
The Provo City Library in Utah faced scrutiny after a conservative outlet highlighted an LGBTQ-themed children’s book in its collection. Director of Library Services, Carla Z. Gordon, confirmed that the library owns a copy of ‘Pride Is Love,’ along with other board books, but clarified they are not on display. These books are shelved among more than 2,500 others, intended for young children, and are made easily accessible.
The Cougar Chronicle shared a photo of ‘Pride Is Love,’ captioning it as an example of the library promoting ‘radical gender theory’ and ‘critical race theory.’ The outlet included images of other LGBTQ children’s books like ‘Pride Puppy!’ and ‘My Two Dads and Me.’
The book ‘Pride Is Love’ is intended for babies to age three, showcasing a girl and her two dads preparing for a Pride parade. Similarly, ‘My Two Dads and Me’ depicts daily routines of LGBTQ parents and children.
Gordon outlined the library’s policy to assist parents in selecting materials aligning with their family values. The library’s Selection Policy aims to provide materials that support education, information, and leisure for the community, accommodating diverse perspectives on various topics.
While the library has received complaints about these materials, Gordon stated they follow a process to review and decide whether to retain, move, or discard items. The policy encourages representation of differing perspectives on gender, sexuality, and race.
The situation drew attention from Utah Senator Mike Lee, who tweeted a response questioning the library’s actions.
