The usual environment for experiencing horror might be dark movie theaters or a basement at home, yet Paranormal Activity proves that even a Broadway theater can deliver intense frights. Premiering at the August Wilson Theatre, this production leaves audiences, numbering around 1,200, in awe. It heavily relies on sound effects that are loud and intense enough to elevate viewers from their seats.
Director’s Expertise
The show is not the first horror piece on Broadway; however, it stands out, guided by Felix Barrett from the British company Punchdrunk. Barrett skillfully utilizes the intimate domestic settings that make Paranormal Activity fearsome. Working with Levi Holloway’s original script, Barrett delivers a meticulously choreographed production. This horror show excels not only in the major scares but also in the significant quieter moments where character vulnerabilities are laid bare.
A Unique Approach
Unlike non-stop spectacles like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, this production opts for a single setting: a house in England. The plot focuses on a young couple adjusting to their new life from Chicago. Actors Cher Álvarez and Travis A. Knight portray this couple whose marriage faces challenges, some stemming from the husband’s fundamentalist mother, played by Shannon Cochran. The stage, designed by Fly Davis, gradually reveals its complexity through Anna Watson’s lighting.
Climactic Revelations
As tension peaks, the arrival of a medium (Eva Kaminsky) triggers chaos within the house. This includes unexpected occurrences like opening doors and mysterious figures. Yet, viewers remain invested in the young wife’s journey dealing with her conflicts. Holloway’s script culminates in a dramatic twist that challenges audience expectations while still making sense.
An Authentic Horror Experience
Unlike many horror franchises that resort to parody, Paranormal Activity keeps its authenticity by avoiding digital effects, focusing instead on psychological realism to foster nightmares. It’s a plot-driven show, keenly focused on audience engagement rather than aiming for theatrical scholarly acclaim.
Broadway Debut
This production initially ran at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater with much of the same cast, transitioning smoothly to Broadway. The August Wilson Theatre provides a different ambiance with brighter exit signs offering a contrast to the darkness, essential for audience safety. However, the production’s chilling atmosphere ensures that even in well-lit moments, the scare factor maintains its grip.
