Enes Kanter Freedom Seeks Explanation for WNBA Ejection
Enes Kanter Freedom is calling for answers after being removed from his courtside seat during a WNBA game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever. His removal came at Wintrust Arena, following an encounter with Sky guard Natasha Cloud during the third quarter. Freedom had attended the game wearing a shirt advocating for the protection of women’s sports, shortly after announcing his intent to enter the WNBA Draft as a protest.
Freedom sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, seeking clarification on his ejection. He claimed the league selectively applied its policies and accused Cloud of initiating the confrontation without consequence. The former NBA player disputed claims that he had provoked Cloud, stating she approached him, yelling and cursing. He was escorted out by security, despite maintaining compliance with arena and league rules.
The letter highlighted potential viewpoint discrimination, arguing that Cloud faced no public reprimand, despite WNBA rules against player misconduct. Freedom contested the decision to remove him without prior notice, contrary to the WNBA Fan Code of Conduct.
Freedom’s removal was linked to his public advocacy and the message on his shirt. He questioned whether his political stance or bid to enter the WNBA Draft influenced the decision. He expressed concerns over a double standard in rule enforcement, citing past incidents involving opposing viewpoints on transgender athletes.
Freedom requested the league provide a policy explanation, detail who ordered his removal, review Cloud’s conduct, refund his ticket, and preserve incident materials. He warned the matter would persist unless the league provides a clear response.
The letter places responsibility on WNBA leadership to address these issues and disclose the rationale behind Freedom’s ejection. The league has yet to respond to Freedom’s demands.
