Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing criticism over his association with far-left streamer Hasan Piker. Concerns arise due to Piker’s remarks about U.S. Jews and their support for Israel. Prominent Democrats warn against such associations.
Piker’s Controversial Remarks
Piker warned that American Jews might face violence if perceived as solely supporting Israel. This comment has led to significant backlash, especially after a stream where he displayed an image of Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss, a Jewish Democratic candidate.
Moss has clarified that a fake audio clip circulating online falsely represents his stance on U.S.-Israel relations.
Piker stated, “If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.”
Democratic Leaders Respond
Top Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have condemned Piker’s remarks. Jeffries referred to the comments as “dangerous and antisemitic,” urging public figures to reject such sentiments.
Responses from Other Democrats
Rep. Brad Schneider was one of the first to criticize Piker, labeling him an “unapologetic antisemite.” He reiterated that Piker’s views should have no place in American politics.
Sen. Elissa Slotkin emphasized that no community should face violence for their political beliefs. She rejected blaming Jewish Americans for antisemitism.
Rep. Haley Stevens criticized Abdul El-Sayed for his ties with Piker. She refused to campaign with someone she deemed the “exact opposite” of her values.
Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Josh Gottheimer also criticized Piker. Booker condemned Piker’s rhetoric, while Gottheimer highlighted the threat of antisemitic ideas.
Other Democratic Voices
James Carville, a Democratic strategist, stated his unwillingness to remain in a party controlled by figures like Piker. He distanced himself from the party’s far-left wing.
Sen. John Fetterman, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, and Rep. Jake Auchincloss all denounced any association with Piker. They emphasized the Democratic Party’s difference from Piker’s ideology.
Sen. Jacky Rosen and Rep. Ritchie Torres reiterated condemnation of Piker’s antisemitic comments, emphasizing Jewish Americans should not bear responsibility for antisemitism.
Abdul El-Sayed’s Response
El-Sayed distanced his Senate campaign from Piker. He condemned antisemitism but stopped short of directly criticizing Piker.
Prominent Democratic voices, including DNC Chair Ken Martin, urged a firm stance against antisemitism, calling Piker’s rhetoric “dangerous, wrong, and antisemitic.”
This controversy continues to unfold as Democrats navigate their party’s stance on associations with controversial figures.
