Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed confidence in SpaceX’s plans to build a $100 billion launch facility along the Gulf Coast, dismissing environmental concerns linked to the project. Speaking to CBS News, Landry highlighted the need for economic opportunities in the region, emphasizing the positive impact the spaceport could have on rebuilding efforts.
The spaceport is set to become SpaceX’s fourth and largest launch site. It will be the main facility for Starship, the reusable rocket launch system under development by SpaceX. The facility will be located on a former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
SpaceX has faced criticism for environmental violations at Boca Chica, Texas. In 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality found SpaceX had violated environmental regulations, releasing pollutants into nearby waters. These actions reportedly violated the Clean Water Act according to an earlier warning from the Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 office, overseeing Texas.
SpaceX stated its commitment to collaborating with federal and state agencies, alongside conservation groups, to protect shorelines, restore wetlands, and support local wildlife and recreation in Louisiana.
Elon Musk expressed gratitude to Louisiana state partners for supporting the new facility in a statement from Louisiana Economic Development (LED). He emphasized the transformative role of the spaceport, saying it will make space travel as regular as air travel, facilitating human exploration of the stars.
LED estimates the facility will create over 11,000 jobs, with around 3,000 direct positions and more than 8,000 indirect jobs in the area. Construction is expected to start next year, with the first launch anticipated by 2029.
Governor Landry praised the partnership with SpaceX, describing it as a historic collaboration for Louisiana and downplaying environmental concerns once more in his interview with CBS.
