Tim Curry became iconic for his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He brought flair and energy to the role, but despite numerous revivals of Rocky Horror on stages from the West End to Broadway, Curry never reprised the role post-1975. Curry, who passed away at 80 in Los Angeles, embraced a vast array of characters throughout his career. “I’ve always moved on,” Curry shared from the Roxy Theatre, marking the location as indicative of his early successes. When meeting at the Roxy last year for the film’s 50th anniversary, he reflected on the film’s surprise longevity as a cult classic. His stroke in 2012 slowed him down, yet his humor and reminiscence remained vibrant.

Curry noted, recalling the cultural impact Rocky Horror held. He expressed pride in embracing the daring and experimental spirit of the era. Beyond this role, Curry’s talents shone in many other memorable performances. He charmed audiences as Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 film Annie, showcasing his ability to blend comedy and music alongside co-stars Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters.
Curry’s flair for layered characters came to life in roles like Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island and Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers. In these roles, Curry captured diverse motivations and emotions, elevating each film with his unique interpretation. Performances in Legend, Clue, and Home Alone 2, further underscored his ability to captivate audiences. Whether as a demonic presence or comedic foil, Curry’s theatrical presence was unmatched, ensuring his work was always a visual and emotional feast.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show catalyzed Curry’s film career; it even inspired a musical pathway with his 1979 hit I Do the Rock.
When talking about his early career, Curry reflected on his initial uncertainty about whether to pursue singing or acting, noting his time with the Royal Shakespeare Company helped develop his passion for acting.
