Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced that at least 34 Australians are missing in the aftermath of the Nepal floods. Information remains scarce due to the disaster’s magnitude. These individuals were part of pilgrimage and tour groups. Wong confirmed that crisis response experts and other officials are being sent to assist.
The loss of life and destruction are described as catastrophic. Australia is taking action to support affected regions.
Sunil Sharma, from Nepal’s tourism board, stated that 47 American tourists are among the hundreds missing following the flash floods. Although the U.S. State Department has not confirmed this number, it is monitoring the situation closely. A disaster response adviser is being deployed, and $500,000 in assistance is being provided through Catholic Relief Services. Officials have reported that over 400 foreign nationals are unaccounted for in a region known for its appeal to pilgrims and trekkers. Countries with missing citizens include India, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia.
In Nepal, officials confirmed that numerous tourists are missing after the deadly floods along the Nepal-China border. The area was hit by flash floods, devastating towns and villages. Reports detailed harrowing scenes as walls of water overtook buildings and bridges. Footage captured at the Rasuwagadhi border crossing illustrated the destruction. The floods affected the Rasuwa region the hardest, with videos showing broken bridges and debris-laden water.
Surveillance videos depicted the terrifying impact in the lush green valleys, showing a drastic transformation due to the water’s force. In Bidur, a passenger recorded chaos from a bus as the flood approached, with people trying to flee on foot and in vehicles. Nepali police shared footage showing roads and structures being completely washed away.
