President Donald Trump recently shared a post from Matt Van Swol, a conservative influencer, on Truth Social. The post warns Republicans of a potential ‘midterm reckoning’ in the 2026 midterm elections. Trump’s action, sharing the post without further comment, signals a rare acknowledgment of possible challenges facing the GOP in the elections amid polls favoring Democrats.

Concerns and Criticisms

Van Swol’s post criticizes Republicans in Congress, not Trump, for voter dissatisfaction. He accuses them of being slow to implement the party’s agenda. Trump’s relationship with Congress has been strained, especially with the Senate’s reluctance to advance the SAVE Act. This bill requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. According to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, there aren’t enough votes for it to pass.

I’m very worried the GOP is sleepwalking toward a midterm reckoning they don’t see coming. People are pissed off that they voted Trump into office and then the GOP continues to slow-walk every reform people want.

Van Swol questions the lack of ‘true mass deportations,’ accountability, or deficit reduction, citing Congress’s lengthy vacations. He warns that frustrations with Washington’s status quo, rather than the expected Trump agenda, may have electoral consequences.

Historical Midterm Challenges

The difficulty for the party in power during midterms isn’t new. Historically, the party in the White House often faces losses, especially if the president is unpopular or the economy is underperforming. Trump’s approval rating hit a national low, with RealClearPolling showing a net approval rating of -17.4 points. Furthermore, economic dissatisfaction is evident with the Consumer Confidence Index falling from 90.2 in July to 89.4 in August.

A poll from YouGov and The Economist highlights economic concerns, with a minimal percentage viewing the economy as excellent.

3%: Excellent condition
21%: Good condition
33%: Fair condition
40%: Poor condition

These findings reflect a general unease that the GOP will need to address to mitigate potential losses.

Electoral Landscape with 70 Days to Midterms

In the House, Democrats need few seats to regain their majority. Meanwhile, Republicans control the Senate with a 53-47 split, posing a challenge for Democrats who must win four seats for a majority. Key states for Democrats include Georgia, Michigan, Maine, and North Carolina. They might also target traditionally conservative states like Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas.

Polls in these states appear competitive, with the Cook Political Report considering several races as toss-ups.

Generic Ballot Advantage

Democrats lead the generic ballot tests with less than 70 days until the midterms. Several polls indicate this advantage:

McLaughlin & Associates: Democrats lead Republicans by 5 points.
Reuters/Ipsos: Democrats lead by 6 points.
Verasight and Strength in Numbers: Democrats lead by 6 points.

Polls also show Democrats closing the gap in traditionally red states. In Alaska, where Trump won by 13 points, polls depict a close race between Democrat Mary Peltola and Republican Dan Sullivan. Similarly, Texas polls show a tight race between GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton and James Talarico, a Democrat. Ohio’s contest is competitive with Democrat Sherrod Brown leading against Republican Jon Husted.

The electoral battleground remains dynamic, with states like Iowa showing a close race despite traditionally backing Trump. Suffolk University’s poll presents a narrow lead for Republican Ashley Hinson over Democrat Josh Turek.
