Virginia Attorney General Faces Criticism Over Immigration Enforcement Disputes
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones recently faced criticism over disputes related to immigration enforcement. These involve a civil rights investigation into a sheriff’s traffic-stop practices and a challenge regarding federal access to driver records.
Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore expressed concern over Jones’ actions. He argued that the Democratic leadership in Virginia displayed an unwillingness to cooperate with former President Trump. This criticism followed Jones’ announcement of an investigation into Greene County Sheriff Steve Smith.
Jones’ Office of Civil Rights launched an investigation into the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. This investigation targets their traffic-stop practices and cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
“I applaud the Greene County sheriff for his cooperation with ICE,” Kilgore stated. He criticized Jones for allegedly prioritizing legal battles with sheriffs over enforcing immigration laws.
Jones’ investigation aligned with Virginia’s new immigration enforcement policy, which changed after Governor Abigail Spanberger took office. Spanberger reversed former Governor Glenn Youngkin’s encouragement of ICE cooperation and signed a law limiting local and state participation in federal immigration enforcement.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office faced allegations of unconstitutional traffic stops, yet their deputies conducted operations with ICE, detaining numerous individuals, including suspected gang members.
Some local activists accused deputies of profiling, while Smith defended their use of reasonable suspicion for traffic stops.
Jones also joined a legal challenge opposing the Trump administration’s request for commercial driver records. U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga blocked the transfer, which Jones praised as a win for privacy.
ICE confirmed their operation involving detentions in Ruckersville. Partnerships with local law enforcement are deemed vital for arresting illegal immigrants.
Kilgore criticized what he described as a political stunt by Jones through the lawsuit, arguing it poses risks to highway safety.
