Understanding the Social Dynamics of Tipping
Mel Robbins learned a surprising lesson about earning large tips while working as a waitress. She was advised to focus on the women at the table, as they often have a strong influence on the gratuity decision.
Robbins, a bestselling author and podcast host, reflected on advice from a ‘mentor-boss’ at the Red Rooster Tavern in Michigan. She shared this insight with The Wall Street Journal, explaining that recognizing who influences tipping can make a significant difference. When a man pays the bill, people assume he decides the tip. However, Robbins was taught that women often suggest the tip amount, especially if the service was commendable.
Robbins described how women might tell their partners, ‘She was great. Give her a good tip.’ Thus, she focused on providing excellent service to women, which often led to better tips.
The secret to a good tip is ‘to ignore the men and to completely take fabulous care of the women.’
Even though this strategy seems to support some social dynamics around tipping, hospitality experts suggest a balanced approach. Robert Mahon, managing partner of Mahon Hospitality Group in New York, acknowledged that women can influence a man’s decision regarding tips, but he advises against ignoring anyone at the table. Instead, skilled servers should be attentive to all guests, ensuring everyone has a pleasant experience.
Research backs the notion that small interpersonal interactions can influence tipping behavior. A study by communication researchers John S. Seiter and Harry Weger Jr., published in 2010, demonstrated that servers who complimented diners tended to receive higher tips. This indicates that generous tips may stem from more than quality service alone.
Lisa Burdette, founder of the Dallas School of Etiquette, also acknowledges that women can sway a man’s tipping decision. Yet, she emphasizes the importance of serving all customers equally, as the final decision on gratuity lies with the person paying the bill.
In conclusion, while focusing on women might seem advantageous, a good server should make every diner feel appreciated and valued. This approach maximizes the chances for generous tips, regardless of who makes the final decision.
