The U.S. Coast Guard, in collaboration with Customs and Border Protection (CBP), stopped a smuggling operation involving over $50 million worth of cocaine off the coast of Puerto Rico. The interception took place on Saturday, August 22, when the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon, supported by CBP air marine operations, intercepted a suspicious vessel approximately 50 miles from the U.S. territory.
Investigators found more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine onboard, estimated to be worth around $54.5 million. Five individuals on the boat were detained as part of the ongoing investigation. The Coast Guard has not yet announced any charges related to the incident.
Lieutenant Commander Michael D. Torgesen praised the cooperation between the Coast Guard and CBP, stating that the successful interception showcased their strong teamwork. He expressed pride in his crew and their efforts to combat transnational smuggling operations in the Caribbean.
The vessel was destroyed by the Coast Guard because it posed a navigational hazard. Admiral Adam Chamie, Coast Guard Southeast District Commander, highlighted the importance of ready crews and interagency partnerships in achieving successful interdictions in maritime operations.
This operation follows the Coast Guard’s recent milestone, where over 75,000 pounds of illicit narcotics valued at $473 million were offloaded at Port Everglades in Miami, Florida. The agency continues its efforts to secure maritime borders and combat drug trafficking.
