Mai Vang, a candidate for California’s 7th Congressional District and a Sacramento City Councilmember, is under criticism after past videos surfaced showing her not participating in the Pledge of Allegiance. These clips, renewed over Memorial Day weekend, portray Vang either turning away or remaining silent during city council meetings while the pledge was recited. As recent as Wednesday, she was seen with her eyes down as others recited the pledge.
Vang has held her position on the Sacramento City Council since 2020. She addressed the reasons for her actions in a 2025 Facebook post. She stated, “As much as I love this country, I use that moment to ground myself—to center our communities and remind myself of the injustices and harm that continue to affect so many, both locally and across the globe, under this nation’s influence.”
In her statement, Vang emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and committed to fighting for equity, justice, and humanity. She encouraged people to stay informed and resist complacency, stating, “We must not tune out… But instead, we resist. We surround ourselves with loved ones, take time to rest, remain vigilant, and stay steadfast in the fight for equity, justice & humanity.”
Vang is part of a group of progressive candidates challenging established Democratic figures, including Rep. Doris Matsui, who has held the California seat for over two decades. Vang has supported policies such as universal healthcare, taxing billionaires more, and the abolition of ICE.
Sacramento Democratic political consultant Steve Maviglio criticized Vang’s actions, stating, “It’s ‘Patriotism 101,’ you say the Pledge of Allegiance even if you don’t agree with everything. You can’t say the Pledge of Allegiance—that’s how extreme you are?”
The primary election is set for June 2. Vang’s stance on the Pledge of Allegiance highlights broader discussions on patriotism and political ideology.
