Kevion Moton, a senior at Waukegan High School, stands out on the football field not because of necessity but due to his commitment and talent. As a two-way player for the Bulldogs, Moton remains pivotal, especially in light of the team’s limited roster at the end of their winless 2025 season. His influence is paving the way for change.
“I may not talk much, but I aim to demonstrate the right way to do things through my actions,” Moton expressed. “The effort I put in during the offseason seemed to inspire some teammates, and I hope it better prepares them for games.”
This season, the team has seen increased participation. First-year coach Darrell Thomas noted that over 40 players have joined the team. Moton remains optimistic that this growing team spirit will bring success, although the Bulldogs suffered a 41-12 loss against Niles North in their season opener. They face North Chicago at home on Friday. “We’ve grown closer as a team, and attendance at practice has improved,” said Moton. “Although some backups are still learning, I believe we can rely on them to compete.”
Waukegan last saw more than one season win in 2016. “I want us to win two or three games and compete strongly,” Moton said. “Last year, games frequently had a running clock by the third or fourth quarter. Opponents didn’t have to exert effort against us, but I want other teams to prepare hard for us.”
Moton’s performance in the opener was impressive, with three tackles, two for loss, and a sack. His 6-foot-3, 230-pound stature in the offensive backfield helped the Bulldogs achieve 213 rushing yards. “Kevion has been impactful, especially having excelled in offseason workouts and in the weight room,” Thomas said. “He’s now playing multiple positions to maximize impact.”
Transitioning from linebacker to defensive end suits Moton. “There’s more direct action at the end position, which I enjoy,” he explained. “Holding the edge is crucial there. At linebacker, you need to interpret the offense’s strategies.”
Moton’s offseason focused on speed and endurance. He attended speed training with Zion-Benton track coach Darnell Rios. “I also ran hills and in my neighborhood,” Moton shared. “During the opener, I noticed improvements in my agility and speed.”

According to senior middle linebacker Jeremiah Hood, Moton’s energy also inspires teammates. “Kevion consistently motivates others to participate in practice, encouraging growth and improvement,” Hood said. “His commitment on the field, setting the edge and directing plays to us, shows how much he helps us perform better.”
Moton’s dedication to football runs deep. “Playing with teammates I’ve grown up with is unmatched,” he revealed. “The crowd’s response when making a big play is exhilarating.”
