Tragic Death of Tourist in Death Valley Amid Extreme Heat

A French tourist died in California’s Death Valley National Park amidst intense heat. The National Park Service (NPS) reported the death of Pierre Michel Formosa, aged 68, on August 21.

According to park officials, Formosa and his travel companion, both from France, were driving along West Side Road near Badwater Basin on August 17. Their vehicle became stuck in mud. Without other vehicles around, they began walking across the salt flats towards Badwater Road in search of help.

Temperatures soared to 116°F, making the conditions extremely harsh. Formosa became unable to continue their trek. His companion managed to continue and was eventually aided by a passing motorist. This motorist informed officials at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center around 2 p.m.

NPS rangers and an Inyo County sheriff’s deputy commenced a search for Formosa. A California Highway Patrol helicopter later joined the efforts and located Formosa around 1.5 miles from Badwater Road. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Inyo County coroner will determine the cause and manner of death,” NPS officials stated.

Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds expressed his gratitude to those involved in the search. He shared thoughts for Formosa’s loved ones. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous,” Reynolds noted.

Death Valley’s extreme environment poses threats due to heat, distances, and remoteness, affecting visitors regardless of their experience.

This incident is part of a series of fatalities at national parks this summer. An 18-year-old hiker died from heat-related symptoms at Grand Canyon’s Bright Angel Trail earlier. Additionally, rock climber Jake Whisenant, 30, died in August following a fall at Sequoia National Park, suffering fatal injuries.
