Wander Franco Exempt from Punishment in Abuse Case
In Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Judge José Antonio Núñez ruled that Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco is criminally responsible for the sexual and psychological abuse of a minor but will not face a sentence. The decision was partly due to Franco being extorted and blackmailed by the minor’s mother, who received a 10-year prison sentence for sexually trafficking her daughter.
Judge Núñez explained that the court granted Franco a judicial pardon based on the unique circumstances, describing it as both logical and legal. Following the decision, Franco thanked his family in court and expressed his relief. He was arrested in January 2024, accused of having a four-month relationship with a 14-year-old girl and paying thousands of dollars to her mother.
After the ruling, Franco, alongside his lawyer Teodosio Jáquez, addressed reporters briefly, asking fans for continued support and stating he felt calm. He mentioned he had not personally contacted the Rays, but believed his lawyers had. Major League Baseball acknowledged the verdict, stating the investigation would conclude at an appropriate time.
Franco’s attorney confirmed Franco’s exemption from punishment, citing the judicial pardon and the recognition of Franco as also a victim. Details of the sentence will be provided once they receive the full documentation on June 16. Franco’s career faced disruption after an 11-year, $182 million contract signed in 2021, as he was under investigation since August 2023. Following his arrest, Tampa Bay put him on the restricted list, halting his pay during administrative leave.
