In a recent episode of Megan Rapinoe’s podcast, “Why Are You Like This?”, the former USWNT star addressed an incident involving Enes Kanter Freedom at a WNBA game. Freedom was ejected from a game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever. The situation unfolded when Natasha Cloud of the Chicago Sky directed her emotions toward Freedom, who was seated near the court. His response prompted Sky players and security to intervene, resulting in Freedom’s removal from the venue.
Freedom later explained in an interview that Cloud had made an inflammatory remark regarding Fever star Sophie Cunningham. He claimed he was merely supporting women and not trying to provoke any hostility. Rapinoe commented on Freedom’s actions and statements, offering a sarcastic critique on her podcast. She questioned his intentions, suggesting that his claims of protecting women were insincere. She highlighted the inconsistency of those who previously criticized women’s sports but now seem concerned about them.
Rapinoe pointed out that individuals like Freedom, who oppose biological men in women’s sports, are detrimental to the cause. She emphasized the need for collective action among women athletes to combat discrimination and ensure respect and fair treatment within sports leagues.
In another comment during her podcast, Rapinoe stressed that women’s sports do not require men to be successful. This aligns with ongoing debates about the participation of biological men in women’s sports amid their rising popularity.
Freedom has repeatedly stated his stance as supportive of women, asserting he is not against transgender individuals or the LGBTQ community. He has noted his attendance at the game was an exercise of free speech.
