Alabama residents are rallying behind Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library following the country singer’s passing at age 80. The initiative is seeing increased backing through a proposed specialty license plate. This support aims to fund the program across the state, which Parton started to foster a love of reading among children.
Significant Increase in Support
Kaelyn Christian, the Alabama state director for the Imagination Library, reported to Fox News Digital that pre-commitments for the license plate surged from around 40 to over 550 within days. The program requires 1,000 commitments for the specialty plate to proceed.
“It’s exploded over the last 24 hours,” Christian said.
Each license plate will contribute approximately $50 annually to the Imagination Library program in the county where it is registered. This provides a continuous funding stream for local chapters, allowing easy and recurring donations.
Parton’s Imagination Library Legacy
Established in 1995, Parton launched the Imagination Library in honor of her father’s inability to read or write. The program gifts a book every month to registered children from birth until age 5. Since its founding, over 300 million books have been distributed globally.
In Alabama, about 114,000 children currently benefit from the program. Christian stated that each specialty plate can fund books for two children for nearly two years, totaling around 48 books. She spoke of her nearly 5-year-old son’s excitement each time a new book arrives.
The initiative also provides families with affordable access to books, which can have a significant impact. Christian shared that one family noted their child now reads 200 books a year after enrolling in the program.
Long-term Impact and Program Expansion
Christian emphasized that the specialty plate aids in sustaining the Imagination Library’s operations. The funds help secure the future of the program by supporting local partners in finding and enrolling children, promoting the initiative in communities, and securing additional funds.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced a statewide expansion of the Imagination Library in 2023. By early 2025, the program had reached all 67 counties, with the state financing 50% for the children involved.
