Senior forward Gabe Barwiolek felt the responsibility of leading Geneva’s scoring efforts this season. He knew the graduation of last year’s top scorers, Caleb Kelly and Ben Murphy, who together netted 39 goals, left a significant gap. With six goals last season, Barwiolek is now the leading returnee. ‘I don’t feel pressure,’ Barwiolek said. ‘I have high expectations for myself, and I didn’t meet them last year. This is the year.’
Blake Hughes, Geneva’s new coach, was pleased with Barwiolek’s performance in the season opener against Waubonsie Valley. Barwiolek scored early in the match and later secured a penalty kick, leading Geneva to a 2-1 victory. Waubonsie’s only goal came from Yasser Gomez during the ceremony for the newly renovated Dick Kerner Stadium.
Hughes, formerly of Timothy Christian, anticipated Barwiolek’s pivotal role. ‘He’s fantastic,’ Hughes stated. ‘After training overseas in Spain, he’s ready to be a key player for us. Without him, we are a lesser team.’
Barwiolek quickly made an impact by scoring from a loose ball after a free kick header during the opening minutes. ‘I saw the header, heard “shoot,” and I did,’ he said. ‘It felt amazing.’
Waubonsie’s Gomez later equalized. Coach Jose Garcia praised Gomez’s energy and control. ‘He’s an Energizer Bunny,’ Garcia remarked. ‘He’s essential for us. His movement and understanding of the game make him invaluable.’
Barwiolek’s decisive penalty kick followed a foul in Waubonsie’s box. Hughes emphasized Barwiolek’s tactical understanding and technical skill. ‘His ball control and awareness are excellent,’ Hughes said. ‘He anticipates the game well without guidance.’

After a college showcase, Barwiolek joined the Soccer Dreams Travel Pro Tour, training in Spain and competing globally. ‘It felt amazing,’ he shared. ‘It was a unique and memorable experience, more so because I’m older now.’

Hughes aims for Barwiolek to contribute substantially to the team’s success this season. ‘Where do you get the goals from?’ Hughes questioned. ‘Last year’s team scored over 70 goals. We need Gabe to score around 25 this year for a great season.’
