Former NBA player Royce White made headlines by attending a WNBA game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, days after Enes Kanter Freedom was removed from a game. Both White and Freedom have declared their intention to join the WNBA Draft as males.
On Friday, White appeared at the Indiana Fever game against the Connecticut Sun, wearing a long blonde wig. This appearance was captured in photos and video by OutKick. Fans welcomed him warmly as he mingled and took pictures.
White’s Motivation and Message
‘All hail Queen Roysha, the queen has arrived,’ White told OutKick. ‘I’m here because Black trans lesbians matter.’
White emphasized the intention to participate and assess potential competition. Freedom’s recent ejection from a game gained widespread attention, and White was asked if his presence might lead to similar incidents. He stressed his goal was merely to observe and support the WNBA and the Fever.
Continuing His Public Campaign
White’s public campaign started with announcing his plan to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. Legal representation, including former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, formally declared his intent to the WNBA, citing a new league collective bargaining agreement. This agreement requires eligible players to be women but lacks a clear definition of gender identity.
According to White, his statement is a challenge for the WNBA to clearly define eligibility criteria. He has suggested possible legal action for discrimination if barred from competing. News outlets reported that White and Freedom might be ineligible for the draft, calling their actions “publicity stunts.” However, White’s legal team hasn’t received a formal decision from the WNBA.
Previous Achievements and Career Background
White was the 16th overall pick by the Houston Rockets in the 2012 NBA Draft, coming from Iowa State. He played in three NBA games, all with the Sacramento Kings in 2014.
