Dolly Parton’s Favorite Southern Dishes and Culinary Legacy
As the world mourns the loss of country music icon Dolly Parton at age 80, her cherished Southern dishes provide a taste of the traditions that were central to her life. Growing up as one of 12 children in Tennessee, Parton often spoke about her love for cooking.
The Role of Cooking in Dolly’s Life
In an interview with Food Network, Parton shared her memories of being in the kitchen. “We were born cooking,” she said, describing how life revolved around the kitchen. She learned to cook from her mother and numerous relatives, who helped shape her culinary skills.
Parton’s Culinary Tips
If I were giving tips, I’d get a notice from the health department because I use a lot of butter,” she told Food Network. “You’ve got to use what makes things taste good — bacon grease was a favorite.
Her love for Southern cooking was supported by her family’s influence and her enjoyment of hearty, flavorful meals. Parton released two cookbooks: “Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s” published in 2006 and “Good Lookin’ Cookin'” in 2024, co-authored with her sister Rachel Parton George.
Signature Dishes
Her signature dishes highlighted her Southern roots. She endorsed various food and cooking products, including cake mixes and frozen meals. In a 2020 interview with Wired, she stated, “I’m a really good cook, but not a gourmet.” Her meals prioritized taste over presentation.
Chicken and Dumplings
One notable dish is chicken and dumplings. A recipe appeared in “Dollywood Presents: Tennessee Mountain Home Cooking” in 1989. Recalling her memories, Parton mentioned, “When I think about my mama, I think about chicken and dumplings.” She invested time in preparing this classic meal, simulating the process her mother used, ensuring every step was done with care.
Biscuits and Gravy
Biscuits and gravy were among Parton’s favorite breakfast options. In 2023, she told Eater, “Everybody makes biscuits, but not everyone makes buttermilk biscuits unless you’re from the South.” She enjoyed them with spreads like apple butter, jam, or jelly.
Banana Pudding
One of her favorite desserts was banana pudding. In a 2022 interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” she expressed her fondness for the dessert, including a recipe for it in her cookbook. It was influenced by her mother and included vanilla wafers and sliced bananas.
Potatoes
Potatoes were another favorite. Parton confessed to Wired, “Every diet I ever fell off was because of a potato.” Whether in the form of fries, baked, or mashed, potatoes were irresistible to her.
Roast Pork
Roast pork, particularly the fatty part, was a beloved dish. Parton mentioned using roast pork with sides like green beans, turnip greens, and fried okra when hosting guests.
Chess Pie
For dessert choices, chess pie was top of the list. Parton preferred pie over cake, especially on her birthday. She clarified to USA Today in 2019, “That is ‘chess,’ not ‘chest,’ pie.”
Dolly Parton’s love for Southern cuisine remains a favorite topic and a warm reminder of her vibrant life and traditions.
