Morgan Park’s Defensive Gem: Darrell Mattison

A Personal Mission on the Field

Darrell Mattison, a senior free safety at Morgan Park, considers every pass aimed his way a challenge. The Ole Miss recruit thrives on proving his prowess through unwavering focus. Mattison describes himself as a “ball hawk” who influences quarterback decisions with his aggressive play and loud demeanor. Despite his playful personality off the field, opponents find little to laugh about when facing him in a game.

Contributing to Morgan Park’s Victories

Mattison’s performance was crucial in a 26-10 win over Niles Notre Dame. He recorded six tackles, two pass breakups, and two deflections. Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. contributed with three touchdown passes, while senior running back Will Smith Jr. added a 40-yard touchdown run. Mattison’s TD-saving tackle preserved a fourth-quarter lead, demonstrating his rank as a top defensive back nationally.

High Praise from Teammates and Coaches

Ronald Smith Jr. expressed admiration for Mattison, highlighting his ability to secure game-changing plays. Coach Chris James recognized Mattison’s rare athletic skills, predicting continuous improvement. Mattison’s recruitment by the SEC stands as a testament to his exceptional talent.

Looking Forward to SEC Ambitions

Mattison plans to graduate early and begin his journey at Ole Miss in January. His commitment to the SEC arose from a long-held dream, built on the appeal of its competitive environment and distinguished coaching staff.

Adaptation and Growth at Morgan Park

Initially aiming to be a standout receiver, a strategic change during a junior varsity game led Mattison to his true calling as a safety. His ball skills transitioned seamlessly, stemming from a foundational ability to evaluate game dynamics.

Leadership Traits and Football Passion

As the eldest sibling, Mattison embodies leadership and ambition. He supports his brother’s youth team and contributes jovial energy to Morgan Park’s roster. Although family members leaned toward basketball, Mattison’s affinity for football’s physicality remains undeterred.
