Foods Best Stored Outside the Freezer
The freezer is a useful tool for preserving food longevity. Yet, certain kitchen staples might retain their quality better when stored elsewhere. Freezing can sometimes alter texture, flavor, or overall quality. The change happens because freezing turns the water inside foods into ice crystals.
Avoid Freezing These Foods
1. Cheese
Freezing cheese might technically be possible, but it can lead to a crumbly or grainy texture after thawing. This change is particularly noticeable with soft and creamy cheeses. To maintain quality, keep cheese well wrapped in the refrigerator and purchase only what you expect to use while fresh.
2. Cooked Pasta
Whether cooked pasta should be frozen depends on the dish. Freezing can soften pasta and cause creamy sauces to separate. It’s best to refrigerate pasta with creamy sauces and consume them within a few days. Heartier baked pasta dishes, however, tend to fare better when frozen.
3. Cured Meats
Cured meats like prosciutto and salami can be frozen, but their texture and flavor may change. This is especially important when served in ways where texture is key, such as in sandwiches or on charcuterie boards. For best results, keep cured meats wrapped in the refrigerator and use them within the recommended time after opening.
4. Wine
Wine should not be kept in the freezer. When wine freezes, the liquid expands, which can affect the bottle and cork. This process does no favors to the wine’s flavor and aroma. It’s better to reseal opened wine and store it in the refrigerator, including red wine. Before serving, red wine should be brought back to the appropriate temperature.
Proper storage methods can help maintain the texture, flavor, and quality of many foods and beverages. While some items freeze well, others do not return to their original state after thawing.
