Los Angeles — Aaron Donald is back with the Los Angeles Rams, ending a 2 1/2-year retirement. He joins Myles Garrett on the defensive line, bringing renewed strength to the team. The Rams confirmed Donald’s return on Sunday after weeks of planning and training.
Donald, now 35, spent a decade with the Rams, first in St. Louis, then Los Angeles. He gained fame as a standout defensive player, claiming three AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, 10 Pro Bowl spots, eight All-Pro selections, and a Super Bowl win. He retired unexpectedly in March 2024.
After retirement, Donald focused on family. Yet, he reconsidered when the Rams traded for Garrett, a fellow elite defensive player. Together, Donald and Garrett have secured five of the last nine Defensive Player of the Year awards. Garrett, from the Cleveland Browns, holds two of the last three.
Donald’s comeback strengthens the Rams’ defense as they pursue a second NFL championship under coach Sean McVay. The team recently added cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson from Kansas City. Last season, the Rams’ offense led the league, spearheaded by MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Former Pittsburgh Panther and retired NFL defensive tackle Aaron Donald made his mark. Now, he focuses on the chance to win another ring alongside Garrett and promising talents like Byron Young, Kobie Turner, and Braden Fiske.
Donald’s decision affects future Hall of Fame eligibility, though his primary aim is contributing to the Rams’ defensive line this season. He would have been eligible for Hall of Fame induction in 2029.
