Scottie Scheffler secured a bogey-free 66 in Saturday’s third round at the Tour Championship, yet frustration was evident throughout the round. After a missed putt at East Lake, his emotions were captured on a hot mic. He voiced concerns about the course’s grain direction. Despite long birdie opportunities in the third round keeping him three shots behind Viktor Hovland on Sunday, Scheffler emerged victorious in the Tour Championship.
Scheffler played through illness during the BMW Championship, highlighting his resilience. On Sunday at East Lake, he shot a 4-under 66, ending at 16-under to win the Tour Championship again. His final round matched the day’s best score, with other top contenders not faring as well.
Scheffler’s pursuit of Hovland intensified quickly. Nearly achieving a hole-in-one on the 211-yard par-3 second hole, he birdied easily as Hovland bogeyed. Other competitors like Ryan Gerard also faced setbacks, making Scheffler’s rise evident.
As the round progressed, Scheffler birdied six holes while facing challenges at Nos. 7 and 14. A birdie on No. 13 gave him the lead, even as Hovland and Chris Gotterup struggled to maintain proximity. Hovland’s opportunities waned as he failed to sink critical putts.
By No. 16, a birdie from Scheffler extended his lead to two shots. Hovland missed a vital putt, signaling his dwindling chances. He then thinned an approach shot at No. 17, leading to another bogey, cementing Scheffler’s lead. Hovland ended the day in second place at 13 under, with Gerard finishing in third and McIlroy among those tied for fourth.
Hovland’s putter deserted him during the final round. Despite his prowess on Saturday, Sunday saw only a 6-foot par save as his notable putt. He faced further challenges with his driver accuracy in the latter part of the round.
A moment of controversy arose as replays suggested Hovland’s club touched sand during a bunker shot backswing. Nonetheless, officials did not penalize him due to inconclusive evidence, though this decision might be revisited.
Scheffler gained a degree of revenge against Hovland after losing a close match at the Travelers Championship. This time, Scheffler began the final round three strokes behind but finished three shots clear of Hovland, marking his second FedEx Cup title.
Without any advantage from starting strokes, Scheffler’s victory came with a three-shot deficit recovery on Sunday. His 2026 achievements include three wins and 13 top-five finishes in 20 starts, signaling a strong season despite not clinching a major. Scheffler’s potential fifth consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award remains contested by Wyndham Clark’s performances.
For American golf, Scheffler’s win is noteworthy following recent international successes in major tournaments and the Ryder Cup. As the Presidents Cup approaches, his reliability as a top player is reaffirmed.
