Retired Marine Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a survivor of the Abbey Gate bombing, spoke on ‘The Big Weekend Show’ about the challenges faced by U.S. Marines during the evacuation of Afghanistan. He explained the circumstances that led to improvisation, as Marines had to deal with unprepared situations and overwhelming crowds.
In the attack that occurred on August 26, 2021, Vargas-Andrews lost an arm and a leg. He described how at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Marines were left to adapt despite leadership warnings of possible chaos. An image from August 26, 2021, shows a U.S. soldier at the airport while massive crowds gathered at an evacuation checkpoint.
Vargas-Andrews highlighted the failures preceding the bombing and emphasized the need for accountability. “Everything we were doing was like figuring it out on the go,” he remarked. Despite their training to adapt, Marines faced significant support shortages, giving their own food and water to refugees with no proper facilities for processing them.
A striking image shows a U.S. Marine rescuing an infant during the evacuation, illustrating the chaotic conditions similar to scenes from the movie ‘World War Z.’ The sheer size of the crowd was overwhelming, likened to a room filled with sand.
Reflecting on the precarious situation, Vargas-Andrews said it could have been better managed with more preparation. Intelligence had warned of threats, yet proactive measures were lacking. Responsibility was attributed to various administrations and departments like the State Department, citing poor decision-making over decades.
The Department of War recently recognized Marines’ efforts during the evacuation, a move welcomed by Vargas-Andrews, but he stressed the need for accountability. He expressed that while this recognition is a positive step, vital actions are still pending. He hopes for more decisive action.
