MichahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, passed away on Saturday following a medical emergency during the team’s season opener. The game was against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.
A spokesperson from William Jewell College stated that Barnett did not have any known conditions that would have prevented him from playing football. “The College has no details as to the nature or cause [of the medical emergency],” they mentioned.
The college shared the news of his passing on social media, expressing condolences to Barnett’s family, teammates, friends, and coaches. A vigil was planned on campus to honor Barnett and support his family.
The tragic event occurred on the sideline during the first quarter of the game, which was subsequently suspended and eventually canceled while medical personnel attended to Barnett. The cause of the medical emergency remains unknown.
Barnett was a junior majoring in business administration and had established himself as a key player in the college’s football program. Originally from the Kansas City area, he attended Liberty North High School, where he contributed to his team’s Missouri state championship win.
Greg Jones, a renowned Missouri football coach, shared, “The world lost a GREAT person today! MicahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. In times like this, we’re reminded of how precious and fragile life truly is. Make sure to tell those around you how much you love them.”
Barnett’s death followed what had started as a promising day for him and the team. He scored a touchdown prior to the emergency. Observers noted a somber atmosphere as those present struggled with the unfolding situation. Despite being transported to a local hospital, Barnett was later declared dead.
On the field, Barnett had become a standout player for the Cardinals. He brought considerable talent, appearing in eight games as a freshman. During the 2025 season, he became the team’s leading rusher despite an injury shortening his season. He amassed 366 yards and four touchdowns, including a notable performance against Kentucky Wesleyan with 150 yards and three scores.
Beyond athletics, Barnett excelled academically, earning Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors. William Jewell College is slated to play away against Kentucky Wesleyan College on September 12.
