Flash Flooding in Grand Canyon Causes Waterline Damage and Search for Missing Hikers
Severe flash flooding disrupted a central water line in the Grand Canyon recently, prompting the National Park Service (NPS) to enforce stringent water restrictions as they search for missing hikers. The NPS announced stage four water restrictions effective from Monday at noon, citing extensive infrastructure damage, including the Transcanyon Waterline which supplies water to the park.
Authorities reported one fatality and estimate that 15 individuals may be missing due to the flooding. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered from the Colorado River but remains publicly unidentified.
The National Park Service requests information regarding hikers and backpackers present in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29. They also seek details from those with campground reservations in the affected area.
Over 62 people have been evacuated since the flooding began. The stage four water restrictions require dry camping without access to water spigots, temporary closure of overnight lodgings, and a strict prohibition on fires for the South Rim and inner canyon regions.
The flooding impacted Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area, destroying nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs stated that state emergency officials continue to work with federal and local authorities in the search.
“My heart is with the families and loved ones of every person unaccounted for after the flash flooding at the Grand Canyon,” Hobbs wrote on X. She added that emergency management is supporting search and recovery efforts.
Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes described the flash flooding as “devastating,” thanking first responders for their ongoing search and evacuation efforts. He noted the damage includes a historic lodge and environmental impacts in the area.
