Supreme Court Decision on White House Construction
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has expressed concerns regarding construction at the White House under President Donald Trump. He stated that the $400 million ballroom project is ‘likely unlawful’ due to the absence of congressional approval.
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court overturned a preceding lower-court order that had paused above-ground construction, according to a report by Reuters. Chief Justice Roberts and the three liberal justices formed the dissenting opinion.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation challenged various aspects of the project. The current ruling did not address the legality of the ballroom itself. As the broader legal proceedings continue, construction is permitted to proceed. The administration has defended the project as a security necessity, emphasizing that it is financed with private donations rather than taxpayer dollars.
