Officials Demand Answers and Action After Power Outages
Local leaders are seeking more information and action regarding the mass power outages from Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan, D-Highland, is pushing for a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) investigation into NiSource, NIPSCO’s parent company. The investigation would focus on the company’s restoration efforts and investment plans.
During a recent event in Merrillville, Mrvan emphasized the importance of assessing both successes and failures in the company’s response to the outages. He stated that federal resources would be leveraged to ensure a thorough investigation and improvement.
FERC oversees monopolies and interstate energy commerce. We will use every leverage to investigate what went right, what went wrong, and what needs improvement.
Gary city officials are advocating for a robust recovery from the ongoing two-week power outage. Mayor Eddie Melton announced a ‘Recovery Action Plan,’ urging NIPSCO to fortify the city’s power grid. He highlighted the resilience of Gary’s citizens and committed to turning the current situation into an opportunity for growth and improvement.
In response, a NIPSCO representative acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the storm, which caused severe damage. NIPSCO has mobilized resources from 14 states and committed to engaging in governmental inquiries related to the event. Their priority remains ensuring safe and reliable restoration for all affected customers.
Mrvan has directed his team to prepare a letter to FERC, highlighting the need to scrutinize NiSource’s response, investment, and maintenance plans. He aims to shift from patience to accountability, using his role on the Energy and Water Subcommittee to facilitate federal oversight.
Further collaboration is anticipated with Governor Mike Braun and local officials to scrutinize NIPSCO’s response. While Braun called for an Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission investigation, Mrvan noted that FERC’s evaluation would address interstate energy transmission, holding NiSource accountable.
Meetings continue with NIPSCO and community leaders to assess needs and share recovery insights. NIPSCO has temporarily suspended non-payment disconnections and contributed $2 million to recovery efforts. Mayor Melton acknowledged these steps but stressed the need for further action.
The comprehensive plan outlined by the city identifies priorities such as relief measures, corporate accountability, and infrastructure investment. Discussions are planned to enhance long-term grid reliability and refine emergency responses.
The path to recovery calls for collective efforts from city officials, contractors, non-profit groups, residents, and businesses. The shared goal is not simply to return to the pre-storm state, but to build a more resilient future.
