The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo continues to escalate, with authorities reporting over 6,000 cases and 2,911 deaths. Despite these figures, more than 1,360 individuals have recovered, providing some relief amidst the crisis.
This outbreak, the fastest-growing in history, faces challenges such as insecurity, displacement, a strike by health workers, and significant population movements. These issues exacerbate the spread of the virus, particularly in displacement sites, where living conditions are harsh. Recently, the virus has reached two new health zones, increasing concern in the region.
The World Health Organization has indicated that the outbreak remains uncontained and might surpass the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which was the most lethal to date, leading to more than 11,000 deaths in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
During a funeral in Bunia, Ituri province, protective gear was essential as a six-year-old child who fell victim to Ebola was laid to rest on August 18. This highlights the risk posed by bodies of Ebola victims, which can contribute to further transmission during burial preparations and ceremonies.
An Ebola response team experienced an attack in Mambasa, Ituri province, when responding to a call to secure a body. Youths armed with machetes disrupted the funeral, causing the team to retreat and injuring one member. Floribert Magene, part of the response team, stressed the need for enhanced security to allow safe operations in affected areas.
“We demand greater security so we can operate in the field and do our work without endangering our lives,” said Floribert Magene.
Given the contagious nature of Ebola-infected bodies, Congolese authorities have made it mandatory for officials to oversee burials, despite resistance from families wishing to conduct these rituals.
The Bundibugyo virus, responsible for this outbreak, is a rare Ebola strain without an approved vaccine or treatment.
