A man accused of raping and sexually abusing his wife will begin his trial in England on Tuesday. The trial includes a dozen other men alleged to have participated in or aided the abuse. The accused, in his 60s and from Stockport in northwest England, allegedly conspired with others to drug and rape his wife while she was unconscious, according to British police. The court proceedings are taking place in Manchester.
The man’s identity is protected under U.K. law to safeguard his wife’s anonymity, the alleged victim. He faces a total of 48 charges, as reported by CBS News partner BBC News. Initially, he denied all charges but later admitted guilt to 15. These include five counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, six counts of assault by penetration, and one count related to sharing intimate photos or films, as reported by Greater Manchester police.
He continues to dispute 11 charges of rape, two charges of attempted rape, seven charges of assault by penetration, and a range of other offenses, according to the U.K’s Crown Prosecution Service.
The other men appearing in court are alleged to have committed various crimes. These include sexually abusing the victim and assisting in administering substances to render her unconscious, thus facilitating the abuse. Prosecutors informed CBS News that the ages of the men range from 28 to 73 years.
This case draws comparisons to the case of Gisèle Pelicot, a French woman who gained international recognition in 2024 when she testified against her ex-husband and numerous other men in a mass rape trial. Pelicot chose to waive her anonymity and demanded public court sessions during the four-month trial against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and 51 other men accused of raping her over several years at his instigation. All involved were found guilty, and Dominique received a 20-year sentence.
