The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have captured Mu’in al-Arabid, Hamas’ head of general security, during a strategic raid in Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the arrest, describing it as a significant operation by Israeli forces within the territory controlled by Hamas. The IDF executed airstrikes to secure the troops’ withdrawal, ensuring no Israeli casualties.
Minister Katz stated, “A senior Hamas terrorist was arrested. Our policy involves actively pursuing, thwarting, and dismantling Hamas’ terrorist network. We have established a robust security zone in Gaza to safeguard local residents and IDF personnel.”
An overwhelming portion of the Gaza Strip faces massive destruction, with nearly 70% reported to be devastated. The IDF has asserted control over the region. Katz emphasized that the IDF will remain until Hamas is disarmed and the territory is demilitarized. Any attempts to breach the security through aerial launches will face stringent counter-measures.
This operation follows the U.S. administration’s demands in August for Hamas to disarm and relinquish control over Gaza. Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, hinted that there might be U.S. support for further IDF actions, contingent on Hamas failing to meet its commitments.
Kushner, after engaging directly with Hamas officials in Egypt, expressed skepticism regarding their promises for peace. “They said all the right things, but trust is hard to come by given their past actions,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of tangible steps toward peace.
The Board of Peace proposal, led by the United States, focuses on a comprehensive approach including a phased ceasefire, Gaza’s demilitarization, controlled withdrawal of Israeli troops, Palestinian governance, and international reconstruction efforts. The initiative seeks to bring lasting resolution to the conflict.
