The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Markwayne Mullin, announced the arrest of thousands during a press conference on Tuesday. This was part of Operation Rotten Apple, which focused on individuals posing public safety threats in New York. Mullin criticized local leadership, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, for not cooperating with federal law enforcement.
Mullin explained that the operation was necessary due to New York City’s leadership attempting to reduce the police budget and limiting cooperation with federal authorities. Over 2,100 serious offenders were arrested across the state within 30 days. Mullin highlighted that these arrests counter New York’s sanctuary policies, which he claimed allowed unsafe individuals to remain on the streets.
Examples included a 39-year-old Indian national wanted by INTERPOL for an alleged rape in Germany, and a 50-year-old Ukrainian with a history of serious crimes like kidnapping and murder. Mullin remarked that these individuals were on the streets due to policies protecting illegal immigrants.
“These individuals should never have been on our streets. While radical-left sanctuary states protect illegal immigrants, the Trump administration and ICE officers are out there every day protecting Americans,” Mullin said.
He also criticized New York politicians for lobbying to release more than 13,000 illegal immigrants and obstructing federal agents’ work. Mayor Mamdani was specifically mentioned for opposing ICE raids, which Mullin argued are essential for public safety.
Mullin denounced Governor Hochul’s termination of 287(g) agreements, which involved local law enforcement working with federal agencies. He claimed many sheriffs and police chiefs privately support cooperation with ICE, despite political resistance from local leaders.
“Restoring law and order is an issue supported by 80% of the public across party lines,” Mullin said. He indicated the federal government would send additional agents to cities where local leadership resists federal law enforcement efforts.
In conclusion, Mullin emphasized that restoring safety in New York is a priority for the administration. He stated federal resources would be allocated as necessary to ensure public safety, highlighting President Trump’s commitment to supporting New York alongside ICE and DHS.
