Police officers across the United States face accusations of misusing Flock Safety camera systems. Concerns over privacy and accountability are increasing as Fox News correspondent Danamarie McNicholl reports. The use of license plate readers by law enforcement agencies is under scrutiny on ‘America Reports.’
Cases of Misconduct
A former sheriff’s deputy in Indiana, Skylar Thompson, 31, faces charges related to misuse of Flock camera technology. Thompson is accused of conducting over 2,000 unauthorized searches for his girlfriend’s license plate over more than a year. He has been charged with official misconduct, a Level 6 felony, and a misdemeanor count of fraud.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department discovered the unauthorized use during an internal audit. Between December 31, 2025, and August 2, the searches were conducted, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. An investigation was initiated by the Indiana State Police after the agency requested it.
Thompson’s Actions
Reports indicate Thompson attributed his searches to “city planning/traffic analysis,” though he was never assigned such tasks. After the misconduct surfaced, Thompson resigned from the sheriff’s department. He later confessed his actions to his then-girlfriend.
Concerns About Flock Cameras
Flock cameras are widely used as license plate readers in towns nationwide. Recent months have seen growing scrutiny of this technology due to privacy concerns and its potential misuse.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the responsibility that comes with law enforcement access to sensitive information and investigative tools. They stated that this access should be used solely for legitimate law enforcement purposes, and no one is immune from the law’s reach, including those who enforce it.

Flock Safety’s Defense
Flock Safety spokesperson Paris Lewbel defended the technology. He stated, “Flock’s technology is an important public safety tool for law enforcement.” According to Lewbel, the technology assists in solving serious crimes, finding missing people, recovering stolen vehicles, and supporting safer communities.
Flock Safety expressed support for legislation ensuring responsible use of technology while preserving the ability of law enforcement to utilize effective tools for public safety. Lewbel articulated the need for strong privacy, transparency, and accountability measures.
