President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, intensifying his ongoing dispute with Canada. This decision has sparked controversy across the United States.
The change, officially announced on August 30, was included in a photo illustration showing a Google map with Lake Ontario labeled as Lake America. The illustration, provided by Nicholas Kamm from AFP/Getty Images, highlights the sudden alteration.
An Ipsos and Reuters poll released on Tuesday reveals widespread disapproval among Americans regarding this name change. About 63% of respondents expressed opposition to Trump’s decision. Only 14% showed support for the renaming effort. Additionally, 21% of the participants were either unaware of the change or unsure of their stance on the issue.
The renaming has become a flashpoint in Trump’s feud with Canada, drawing attention from citizens and officials on both sides of the border.
