As the Detroit Pistons prepare for their training camp this month, a contract dispute with All-Star Jalen Duren remains unresolved. The Pistons’ latest offer is lower than what Duren seeks.
On Tuesday, NBA analyst Tim McMahon revealed that the Pistons proposed a five-year, $35 million contract to Duren. His representatives, however, have indicated their desire for over $40 million. McMahon described the situation as a prolonged standoff, with no resolution yet in sight.
McMahon noted the rare nature of such negotiations involving an All-Star player and a past All-NBA Third Team member. This intensifies the spotlight on Duren’s contract discussions.

Duren has a few choices. One option includes playing under a $9.6 million qualifying offer for the upcoming season. The Detroit Free Press reported that Duren must decide on this offer by October 1. Accepting would make him an unrestricted free agent next year, opening the possibility of securing a four-year max deal elsewhere.
However, McMahon pointed out the financial risk. Opting for the qualifying offer could mean forgoing over $170 million in guaranteed money. Since 1998, only 21 players have chosen this path, highlighting its rarity.
Last season, Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, contributing significantly to the Pistons’ 60-win season and top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons aim to retain Duren as part of their future strategy, but his free agency could alter plans. The collective bargaining agreement’s restrictive apron rules have influenced the Pistons’ firm negotiation stance.
Duren’s breakout season last year has led some to hope he accepts the Pistons’ current offer. With training camp starting September 29, there are still weeks for potential agreement over Duren’s future role.
